 Around Hampi

Underground Temple:This large Underground Temple was excavated by Archaeological Dept., belonging to 14th Century. This is dedicated to Lord Shiva as Prasanna Virupaksha. This temple is always filled with water upto 1 feet. It has a series of doors, as many as 7 in number.



Achutaraya Temple:
Achutaraya temple is at a distance of 150 meters from the Virupaksha Bazaar. The north facing temple complex was built by Achutadevaraya in 1530-42 A.D. This was dedicated to Lord Tiruvengalanatha. One can get an excellent arial view of this temple from the top of Matanga Hill, which is next to the temple complex.



Ganagitti Temple:
This neat and compact early structure is popularly called the Gangitti Temple. This Jaina Temple was one of the earliest temples of Vijayanagara Kingdom.




King's Balance: The monument popularly called as towards the East of Vittala Temple. Here one can see a huge ornamental stone frame, which was probably used for weighing the king against precious Gems and metals, during auspicious occasions. These were then distributed among the poor and needy.



Balakrishna Temple: This large ornate temple was built by Krishnadevaraya in typical Vijayanagara Style of Architecture, to immortalize his victory at Orissa from where he brought the Idol of Balakrishna. This temple is an interesting point for Tourists, for the number of sub-shrines it contains within its complex.



Koti Linga: "Koti linga" literally translated in English means one crore lingas. This is situated along the banks of river Tungabhadra near chakra thirtha. This is the most sacred place for pilgrims to cleanse themselves in the holy waters of river Tungabhadra.



Bhojana Sala: The Dining Place known as "Bhojana Sala" has water channel about 1 meter wide and 0.6 m deep, running about 23 meters. This channel is lined with a row of green chlorite slabs on either side, which are set horizontally with circular depressions large and small for taking food.








Malyavantha Temple: This temple of Vishnu in the form of Lord Rama is situated on a hill. This temple has a great significance in the Hindu epic, Ramayana. The walls of the inner sanctum are attached to a large natural boulder on which are carved images of Lord Rama, Sita and Laxmana. It is believed to be the place, where Rama spent the whole of monsoon, while searching for his wife, Sita.
